No spooks, just the facts

13 November 2009

Interested to watch Wednesday's episode of Spooks. Amusing to see Sir Harry and the MI5 team tackle the issue of the UK's energy reserves.

Although the drama seems far-fetched, the UK has been operating on a low energy security margin.  Capgemini's last European Energy Markets Observatory (EEMO) Report uncovered that the UK's margin in electricity generation had been at its lowest level in 10 years - placing the UK at risk of power shortages.  The report flagged how highly dependent we are on foreign gas - 21% of the UK's gas is imported.

Energy security is likely to be better served by investment in new energy sources and renewables, than James Bond style antics.  The next EEMO report, out next week, will reveal the latest situation for UK - minus the drama and spies.
