Closer to home, Disconnector has warmed to BERR’s new man in the Upper House, Lord Jones of Birmingham. Most readers will be more familiar with him as the former director-general of the CBI, Digby Jones.
He has been on the receiving end of various barbed comments about joining the current administration. He is not a natural Labour supporter, after all. Indeed, he is sitting as a cross-bencher in the Lords.
Last week, Lord Jones was answering questions about the UK’s energy supplies. Former Tory Cabinet minister Lord Baker of Dorking (aka Kenneth Baker MP) slyly suggested that the Brummie should take the house into his confidence. “Does he sometimes lie awake at night, worrying whether he has joined the wrong ship?”
Lord Jones is a bit of a bruiser and gave as good as he got. “My Lords, as a former serving officer in the Royal Navy, I have never worried about joining the wrong ship.” Arf, arf!
