
next time you catch a whiff in the air, don’t be surprised. It might just be art. Northeasterners are turning up their noses at the region’s latest exhibition, which has just opened at Sunderland’s Reg Vardy Gallery. You can’t see, touch or hear any of the 14 artworks on display – they are smells created by perfumers and chemists across the world and include the acid whiff of a meteorite and Cleopatra’s favourite perfume. Event sponsor Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is no stranger to olfactory issues. It adds a special smell to the gas it transports to help people detect gas leaks, as NGN integrity engineer Barry Dalus (shown) knows well.
