Readers of a more sensitive or nervous disposition may wish to look away now. Organisers of a river festival scheduled to take place from 31 May have cancelled the event after spotting, erm, sewage in the water...
The grand plan was to attract up to 5,000 people to the River Towy in Carmarthen for a week of activities including raft and coracle racing, kayaking and sailing. But following heavy rainfall the plug was pulled after sanitary towels, condoms and faeces were spotted in the Towy.
Welsh Water tried to reassure organisers that there was no need to scrap the event by pointing out that the river was tidal and the material spotted was the result of the release of storm water at a local pumping station that had built up after an intense burst of rainfall. The water company promised to carry out some clean-up work.
But festival chairman Ian McCue said: "When we arrived there was a distinct smell and when we looked in the river there was all kinds of sanitary towels, condoms and human faeces in the water... After talking to Welsh Water we have no choice but to cancel it. We needed it in writing from them saying that the river
is fit for purpose but they won't give it."
Plainly, a matter of trust.
