However you view it, there's no faulting the ambition of the latest proposals for the Battersea Power Station site in London. The new owner has commissioned a top architect to come up with a whizzo green development with green roofs, CHP and a huge tower with solar-driven passive ventilation. But will it ever be developed? Past bids have been consigned to the dustbin of history. John Broome of Alton Towers fame was going to turn the power station into a theme park. He went bust. The station has had a chequered past. A fire in 1964 caused power failures that delayed the launch of BBC Two. It appeared in the Beatles film Help! in 1965. And famously an inflatable pink pig floated over the station on the cover of the 1977 Pink Floyd album Animals. Chaos ensued when the pig broke free and flew into the Heathrow flight path.
