Media regulator Ofcom has been pitched into the row over the government's Bedtime Stories television ad, part of its Act on CO2 campaign.
The ad is already the subject of an investigation by the Advertising Standards Authority. Punters have complained that the ad's claims about climate change existing, being man-made and that 40 per cent of CO2 is the result of man-made activity are supposition rather than fact.
Oh, and other complainants have claimed the ad is distressing to children. It features a father telling a bedtime story of a "very, very strange" world with "horrible consequences" for today's children. The ad is designed to make adults feel guilty about the legacy they may be leaving their young families.
Hmmm.
Now Ofcom is involved 'cos it has received complaints that the ad constitutes political advertising. It seems that under the Communications Act, the government is allowed to run advertising that falls under the general heading of public service - ie warnings about carbon monoxide poisoning, obesity or drink driving - but not material that aims to "influence public opinion on a matter of public controversy".
Don't wait up, though. Both watchdogs have admitted that verifying the claims and counter­claims is going to take quite a long time. Of course.
