Energy suppliers accused of conducting phoney price war![]() Consumer watchdogs and energy industry observers have criticised domestic energy suppliers for merely following the leader in their response to British Gas's move last month to cut gas prices by an average of 7 per cent. By last Tuesday, three of the big six suppliers had responded. Npower matched British Gas with a cut of 7 per cent while Eon Energy and Scottish and Southern Energy signalled cuts of 6 and 4 per cent respectively. Scott Byrom, an energy expert at Moneysupermarket, called the expected price war "a price fisticuffs". Robert Hammond, energy expert at Consumer Focus, accused suppliers of operating "with a pack mentality". He said wholesale prices had been falling since 2008 "yet our suppliers wait until the spring to pass on meagre price cuts - it is a model of how a competitive market shouldn't work".
