Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee pans draft energy National Policy Statements![]() Parliament has given the thumbs down to the government's draft suite of energy National Policy Statements (NPSs) and called for major improvements to make them "fit for purpose". The all-party Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee called for a parliamentary vote on the statements after it completed its inquiry into them. The MPs said the draft was too focused on generation and did not take "a sufficiently holistic view of the energy sector". The committee said the statements needed to "make more explicit reference to transport and heating, especially as the electrification of these sectors will be crucial in achieving a low-carbon economy and will impact on the need for new generating capacity". They said proposals from the Committee on Climate Change calling for the electricity sector to be fully decarbonised by 2030 if the UK is to be on course to meet its 2050 target for greenhouse gas emissions should be incorporated. "This would provide a long-term view of the UK's energy requirements that would better inform decision making on new generating capacity by the Infrastructure Planning Commission," they said. The report also highlighted a number of concerns about the current drafting of the NPSs. The MPs said they were concerned that "decision making by the IPC could give rise to an energy infrastructure that risks breaching the UK's carbon budgets". Their report includes a number of safeguards to prevent this. Source: Utility Week © Faversham House Group Ltd 2010. News articles may be copied or forwarded
