Infrastructure UK to prob high cost of doing business in BritainThe newly established Infrastructure UK (IUK) has been asked by ministers to develop a national policy framework for infrastructure developments by the end of the year to be ready in time for the next government spending review. This initiative has been designed to make sure that decisions on prioritisation and timing of projects can be made against a backdrop of a long-term, cross-sectoral view of infrastructure needs. IUK has made it clear that the resilience of the country's infrastructure is a key policy area for the new entity, as are the civil engineering costs associated with major projects. The organisation is concerned that when the latest plans for high speed rail links in the UK were considered alongside schemes in France and Spain, UK costs came out around 50 per cent higher. A report investigating the issues involved has been commissioned and will be published by the end of this year. Also on IUK's immediate agenda is the development of an infrastructure technology strategy, due to be published next year. IUK's steering committee includes National Grid chief executive Steve Holliday and Chris Bolt, whose background includes water and energy regulation. The new organisation has cross-party backing, so should not be a casualty of the general election. Source: Utility Week © Faversham House Group Ltd 2010. News articles may be copied or forwarded
