3 in 10 consumers wrongly billed by utilities![]() Three in ten households have been billed incorrectly by their energy company within the last two years, according to research from a price comparison and switching website. uSwitch.com compared answers from two YouGov surveys of over 2,000 people each in 2009 and 2010. Other findings were that the average average amount owed following a billing discrepancy is now £153, some 8% higher than in 2009 and that more households are now taking their own meter readings. As in previous years, the survey found consumers view energy companies as worst for getting bills wrong, ahead of the taxman and communications providers respectively. However, year on year, the research showed an improvement in billing accuracy: last year's survey put the figure at 35 per cent. It also showed the industry is improving response times when dealing with problems. Energy UK which represents energy companies, said the improvements were to commended. "We are encouraged that 71% of households are now contacting their energy company, with accurate meter readings as this is one of the easiest ways to avoid any problems that can come from estimated billing," said spokesman Peter Jenkins. "The introduction of smart meters this decade will enable customers to increase control over their energy use and see exactly how much energy they are using in their home."
