National Grid unveils smart metering "breakthrough"

20 April 2010

National Grid has unveiled innovative new mobile communications-based domestic energy meters which its OnStream metering business claimed today are the "smartest" available. As well as a brand new electricity smart meter, the company has developed a standalone smart gas meter, believed to be the first which does not rely on electricity meters to transmit information. The metering technology has been under development for 18 months and 2,000 of the new meters will undergo trials later this summer with two of the big six energy suppliers, npower and Scottish and Southern Energy. The equipment has been designed around a core communications platform using ZigBee wireless technology. The technology package includes the ability to communicate with smart appliances, which will help the move towards smart energy networks. The new meters feature a roaming SIM which allows them to pick up the strongest nearby mobile network to transmit information. As well as two-way communications, the meters have been designed to meet all current and expected industry and government functionality requirements. National Grid insists that the new electricity meters are the greenest available at present with the lowest power consumption of any on the market. OnStream director Sharon Rodriquez said National Grid had no plans to become a meter manufacturer but had lined up a supplier who could mass produce the units. "Our new meters offer our customers - the energy suppliers - a significant step forward in both technology and service" she insisted.
