Nuon plans new Dutch gas plant![]() Nuon says that a new gas-fired power plant planned for Hemweg in Amsterdam will start operating at the end of 2012. The Dutch utility has signed a contract for the construction of Hemweg 9 with German engineering firm Siemens and says that construction will start in June of this year. Hemweg 9 will replace old production units at the Hemweg site and will have a capacity of 435 MW, enough to supply electricity to around 750,000 households. The plant will be a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) unit, making it highly efficient with low emissions of NOx. It will also be designed for conversion in the future to generate heat as well as electricity, says Nuon. Hemweg 9 will replace Hemweg 7, a 511 MW coal-fired power plant. On completion of Hemweg 9, overall generation capacity at the site will reach 1210 MW. Source: Utility Week © Faversham House Group Ltd 2010. News articles may be copied or forwarded
