Strikes looming at Eon?![]() Industrial action may be on the cards at Eon following the firm's announcement that it plans to cut wages for call centre staff. Eon has proposed a pay cap for call centre workers in 2012 or 2013 in a bid to cut costs. Its intention is to limit the pay to £17,850. However, a spokesman said it plans to mitigate the effect of the cap by creating a new position above that grade and offer a bonus of £1,500 should the proposal be accepted. "We pay rather well for the sector and are trying to realign pay in the most equitable way possible," he added. Unison has condemned the move. It said some 4,500 workers are affected with most likely to see salaries drop by around £1,000 under Eon's proposals. "This offer is a result of our negotiations, we have said that we can't accept it and have asked staff to vote," a Unison spokeswoman told Utility Week. "If they can't accept the offer then strike action is the only course of action." She added that Unison members were balloted on 10th May and that a decision on further action would be made at the end of the month. When informed of Unison's comments Eon responded: "We believe that it is a premature response from Unison as the positioning from Unison internally is not a recommendation to reject but it is 'the best that can be achieved through negotiation'. 'If there is a ballot and if there is a vote for strike action then we will ensure contingency measures are in place to protect our customers.' Source: Utility Week © Faversham House Group Ltd 2010.
