Coalition says infrastructure planning commission will be axed

The new government confirmed today that it will scrap the Infrastructure Planning Commission. That intention is highlighted in the 30-page document just published which sets out the full agreement reached by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats over the immediate measures planned by the coalition. The document stated explicitly that:"We will abolish the unelected IPC and replace it with an efficient and democratically accountable system that provides a fast-track process for major infrastructure projects". The government has also committed to "reform energy markets to deliver security of supply and investment in low carbon energy, and ensure fair competition including a review of the role of Ofgem". Meanwhile ministers have made it clear that they "will instruct Ofgem to establish a security guarantee of energy supplies". In addition the document promised that the administration will "examine the conclusions of the Cave and Walker Reviews, and reform the water industry to ensure more efficient use of water and the protection of poorer households". As well the government has announced it will "investigate measures to help with fuel costs in remote rural areas, starting with pilot schemes".
