Domestic electricity competition arrives in Northern Ireland

As of this morning, households in Northern Ireland can switch from NIE Energy to Airtricity. The Scottish and Southern Energy-owned firm promises discounts of up to 14 per cent against the incumbent, claiming cutomers can save around £95 per annum.
Currently, only 6,000 customers per month can switch without contacting NIE Energy. However, the Utility Regulator and industry is working to introduce an unlimited system.
Airtricity says it will extend competition to pre-payment customers by April next year.
