MPs to probe emissions performance standards for power plants

Parliament has launched a new inquiry into Emissions Performance Standards (EPSs) for power stations. The Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee has decided to investigate what factors ought to be considered in setting the level for an EPS and what would be an appropriate level for the UK - both in terms of coal-fired and gas-fired plant. As well the MPs on the all-party committee are keen to explore what benefit an EPS would bring beyond the emissions reductions already set to take place under the European Union's emissions trading scheme (ETS). In addition the committee wants to understand what impact an EPS would have on both the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and equally on domestic energy prices. Written evidence should be submitted to the committee by Monday 6 September 2010.
