First offshore transmission operators announced

Balfour Beatty Capital, Macquarie Capital Group and Transmission Capital Partners will own and operate 2 gigawatts of offshore wind transmission links for Barrow, Gunfleet Sands, Robin Rigg, Sheringham Shoal, Thanet and Walney windfarms after Ofgem announced its preferred bidders under the transitional regime.
Yet to be decided in this tender round is which of these three firms will be the offshore transmission operator (OFTO) for Ormonde. The regulator is running an additonal "best and final offer" round to try to separate the bidders for that project. For Scottish & Southern Energy and RWE npower's 505MW Greater Gabbard wind farms National Grid Offshore and Green Energy Transmission remain in the running, along with Macquarie and Transmission Capital. Dong pulled out of an earlier tender round. Both these tenders are expected to be complete by the end of the year.
A further round of tenders will begin in November for six projects representing 2GW of capacity and investment of £1.8 billion.
OFTOs get a 20 year regulated revenue stream with volume/price risk but can lose 10 per cent of revenue if the transmission link is unavailable for the operator.
