Gwynt y Mor offshore substation contract awarded to Belfast firm

Siemens has awarded a multimillion pound offshore substation structure contract to Harland and Wolff. The Belfast-based firm will deliver two units for the 576MW Gwynt y Mor offshore wind farm being developed in Liverpool Bay by an RWE Innogy-led consortium.
The win, its first contract with Siemens, represents a breakthrough for H&W, which will be using design elements from shipbuilding that take Siemens' offshore substation platforms in a new direction. The German engineering giant said it was impressed by the design concepts.
Construction work at Gwynt y Mor should start late next year, with completion anticipated in 2014.
