Huhne warns energy firms over 65 day ruleChris Huhne has warned energy firms not to block changes to the 65 day rule when Ofgem consults on changes to the regime next month. Changes to the practice can be vetoed if 20 per cent of suppliers object. The energy and climate change secretary has moved to curb such a move by threatening to use his powers under the Energy Act 2010 to modify the conditions of supply licences. "It's outrageous," said Huhne of the current practice. "I can't think of another example where you start paying more for something without being told about it. If energy companies block the changes that Ofgem will propose, I won't hesitate to use my powers." Consumer groups have welcomed the government's stance. Which? said customers should be warned ahead of price changes to give them time to explore alternative tariffs, switch supplier, or budget to meet the increased energy costs.
