Longannet carbon capture and storage project in trouble

The scheme is the only survivor of the first CCS competition run by the Government and has been in line for £1 billion funding. UW understands that funding issues are the main problem

Both ScottishP ower and the Department of Energy and Climate Change have refused to comment and are insisting that "negotiations over the next phase of the CCS demonstration competition are continuing."

In June, Scottish Power and its partners National Grid and Shell UK announced plans for a strategic 'hub' designed to handle up to two million tonnes of CO2 from Longannet for storage under the North Sea.
