ASA bans "misleading" pro-wind and anti-wind adverts![]() British Wind and Communities Against Turbines Scotland (CATS) have been banned from publishing their "misleading" adverts by the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA). CATS published a regional press advert showing a decommissioned wind farm in Hawaii with the claim "Alex Salmond wants to build 8,750 of these monstrosities". Scottish Renewables and two other readers complained that the advert was misleading because Scottish regulations prevent turbines deteriorating to this level, the type of turbine pictured had not been used in Scotland, and that the figure of 8,750 was significantly higher than had been proposed. The ASA upheld these claims and ruled that advert must not appear again in its current form and told CATS that any adverts they run in the future must reflect the types of turbines likely to be used in Scotland, they should not exaggerate the number of turbines, or the possible consequences of the Scottish Government's plans to use wind turbines. In a separate ruling, the ASA also banned three magazine adverts by British Wind following five complaints that they were misleading. The ASA ruled that claims "70per cent of British gas will be imported by 2020" and "Wind... can keep bills down in the face of rising gas prices" could not be substantiated. The adverts were banned from appearing again in their current form. Source: Utility Week © Faversham House Group Ltd 2012. News articles may be copied or forwarded
