Energy efficiency key to limiting gas related price hikes![]() Improved energy efficiency is key to insulating consumers from price increases that could be caused by a growing reliance on imported gas, according to Consumer Focus and Which? The organisations responded to comments from Ofgem's chief executive Alistair Buchanan, who warned new gas plant needed to meet the UK's energy demand would expose Britain to international gas markets, potentially leading to rising energy bills. Mike O'Connor, chief executive at Consumer Focus, said: "in the long term the best hope is more energy efficient homes." He went on to urge the government to use money raised by a carbon tax to fund insulation measures, adding: "reducing demand is quicker, cheaper, more sustainable and solves the problem at source." Richard Lloyd, executive director at Which? backed calls for energy efficiency measures to ensure "consumers are properly protected from unaffordable misery". He added that the government should do more to improve the energy efficiency of homes, but also wanted to see a more competitive energy market and for ministers "to guarantee every customer gets the cheapest possible deal". Demand reduction is also "vital" to limit the imapct of gas related price rises, according to the chief executive of the Energy Networks Association (ENA), David Smith. He said an integrated smart grid would "benefit consumers and save money". Smith says this would be achieved by "reducing the investment needed in infrastructure, supporting the growth of intermittent renewable and improving the use of small scale generation from our homes." By New homes to this standard - http://www.transitionlinks.org/?p=691 By Ray Cope It is sad that Ofgem did not shout about this during the Blair years when our energy policy was non existent. Both Blair and Ofgem have a lot to answer for. What an appalling mess. © Faversham House Group Ltd 2013. News articles may be copied or forwarded
