Eon UK opens Engineering Academy

16 April 2009

Skills secretary John Denham has opened Eon UK's Engineering Academy. The academy is a training centre open to applicants from across the industry and will offer training from entry level up to foundation degrees. Eon UK chief executive Paul Golby said: "We are investing billions of pounds in our industry, which will help boost the UK economy and ensure we have the right people with the right skills for a sustainable mix of energy resources." Eon UK is working with colleges and universities nationwide to develop qualifications for the industry, he said. The Engineering Academy is based at three sites in the Midlands and is currently training 220 Eon UK apprentices plus 288 from other companies. The academy also aims to support engineering courses Eon UK has developed in conjunction with Walsall College and Aston University. Industry estimates suggest that by 2012 there will be a shortage of 9,000 workers in electricity distribution alone.
