Number of apprentices doublesThe number of people completing an apprenticeship has doubled over the past four years, despite claims that careers advisers are unaware of apprenticeships. There were 112,600 apprenticeships completed in 2007/08, compared with 49,300 in 2003/04. There was also a record number of new apprentices, with 225,000 starting an apprenticeship in 2007/08. The Engineering and Technology Board, however, has found that there is a lack of awareness about apprenticeships as a route into engineering. It found that 55 per cent of careers advisers, teachers, tutors and lecturers believe a degree is the minimum qualification required for a career in engineering, and are unaware of apprenticeships. The Learning and Skills Council found that 81 per cent of 500 companies using apprentices said that the apprentices had increased work output and 66 per cent thought apprentices made them more competitive. More than 82 per cent relied on apprentices for future skilled workers. Source: Utility Week © Faversham House Group Ltd 2009. News articles may be copied or forwarded
