London Mayor Boris Johnson sets out plans for greener London

A quarter of all heat and power used in London should come from decentralised energy systems by 2025, Mayor of London Boris Johnson has said. In a strategy to decarbonise London, the mayor said gas-fired combined heat and power and district heating and cooling systems would be prioritised, along with energy from waste and biomass. Five per cent of the capital's energy should come from renewable sources by 2020, and carbon emissions should fall to 60 per cent of 1990 levels by 2025. The burden of Johnson's proposals fell on new developments. All new developments must be zero carbon by 2019, the mayor said, with sustainable design, features such as green roofs, and limited reliance on air conditioning systems. Among the water-related requirements were: a consumption target of 105 litres per person per day for residential sites; use of water-saving devices and sustainable drainage systems where practical; and ensuring there is adequate sewerage infrastructure.
