Wind energy breaks records for output in Spain

Wind generators led the way in Spain in early November with wind energy notching up a new record for energy production, according to grid company Red Eléctrica de España (REE).
With output as high as 10,170 MW, wind turbines in the country met 53 per cent of electricity demand at one point on Sunday 8 November. The figure far exceeds the previous record of 45.1 per cent, which was attained just three days earlier on Thursday 5 November.
The latest record came between the hours of 3am and 8.30am on 8 November when wind energy continuously covered over 50 per cent of demand, which ranged from 19,000MW to 21,700MW, says the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE).
Wind energy also led electricity production in the first nine days of November, generating a total of 1770.4GWh compared with 1,370GWh generated by combined cycle plants and 1223.4GWh by nuclear power plants.
The peaks in wind power production have highlighted the need for increased network interconnections with neighbouring countries, says REE, which wants to build a new electricity link with France.
Exporting electricity is one way of coping with the temporary oversupply of electricity from wind farms, but Spain has limited interconnections with Portugal, France and Morocco. Environmentalists are opposing the construction of a new line to France.
AEE has emphasised that the country's electricity system functioned normally during the recent peaks of wind energy generation.
Spain has an installed wind power capacity of nearly 17,000MW and wind energy covered 11.5 per cent of demand in 2008, according to AEE.
