United Utilities sludge treatment upgrade will deliver renewable energy to grid![]() A major upgrade to United Utilities' Davyhulme wastewater treatment works will enable the Manchester facility to power its own treatment process and feed energy back into the grid. Black & Veatch has won the £75 million contract, which will double sludge treatment capacity and process biosolids to a standard that enables them to be used as a fertiliser. The biogas produced will be used in a combined heat and power plant to generate up to 10 megawatts of electricity. Initial operation is expected by autumn next year, with completion in 2012.
