The Environment Agency (EA) is proposing to reduce the amount of water Thames Water abstracts from the River Kennet.
The EA is consulting on a reduction in Thames’ abstraction limit at Axford Pumping Station, from 13,100 cubic metres of water a day to 6,000, when the river levels are low. This is designed to protect the river, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The EA also wants to revoke the utility’s licence at Ogbourne Pumping Station.
Both conditions will become effective on 1 April 2017 subject to consultation and the licence will be reviewed in 2023.
