United Utilities fined £13,000
Chester Magistrates Court fined United Utilities £12,000 for discharging 17 times the allowed amount of aluminium in a drain outside its Huntingdon Water Treatment Works, the Chester Chronicle reports.
The company must also pay £996.84 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
The problem was discovered as part of routine check by Environment Agency officers, although the court heard that United Utilities had been aware of the pump problem. The officers discovered 103 micrograms per litre compared to the legal discharge limit of six micrograms per litre. Suspended solids were over double the permitted levels.
Meic Davies, acting Area Manager for the Environment Agency in North Wales said: "This was a serious breach of the consent which could have, under different circumstances, caused environmental damage to the stream."
